Our Grandmothers Initiative
In partnership with the Grandmothers Advocacy Network (Canada), and PEFO (Uganda), GIVE International is bringing awareness to the plight of grandmothers in sub-Saharan Africa who are raising a generation of children. The HIV/AIDS epidemic in countries such as Kenya and Uganda has resulted in more than 15 million children being orphaned, and the United Nations estimates that approximately 60% of these children are cared for by grandparents. Gender inequality and poverty are closely related, resulting in women of all ages being more vulnerable to physical, sexual, and emotional violence. In Sub-Saharan Africa, violence against women is both a cause and a consequence of the HIV/AIDS pandemic, making grandmothers and the children in their care particularly vulnerable. Working in partnership with GAN and PEFO, we identify opportunities to advocate for policies and programs that will have a positive impact for the grandmothers of Uganda who bear a disproportionate burden.
